NSA wiretaps

On Monday, February 6, at 9:30 a.m., the Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing on the National Security Agency's surveillance authority. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is scheduled to testify. Unless members of Congress hear that their constituents are concerned about this flagrant abuse of power by the Bush administration, Republican leadership is likely to sweep it under the rug and pass legislation that gives President Bush the powers he has seized illegally.

What you can do:
Before Monday's hearing, call your senators WWW.SENATE.GOV to state your concerns about the program.
If your senators are not on the Judiciary Committee, ask them to forward your concerns to a committee member before Monday morning's hearing.

Here are some talking points:
**The President is not above the law. I want Senator (name) to do his/her job by protecting U.S. residents from this abuse of power and flagrant violation of the Fourth Amendment.
**The Judiciary Committee must question the Attorney General and insist that all requested documents pertaining to this critical issue be delivered. If Congress fails in this pursuit, it would be a party to a cover-up.
**Former Deputy Attorney General Comey suspended the program , and NSA employees blew the whistle because they found the program to be unconstitutional. Congress must stop the program and restore our constitutional rights.
**The FBI has revealed that the program is not "limited," and that thousands of phone calls of innocent people have been tapped. This waste of time and resources does not make our nation safer, and Congress must refuse to accept the Bush administration's claims that it does. It must shut it down.
**Our country has been down this road before, and Congress passed new laws to guard against domestic spying on innocent people. When the Executive Branch bypasses those laws, it is denying the people any assurance that our Fourth Amendment rights are protected. Congress needs to stand up and assure protection of our rights.
